Teaching and Training
The involvement of the Heart Institute of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (iCor) at the teaching level is very present in all stages of training, both in schools, institutes and universities, as well as in third-degree training.
The key to offering a quality and expert service in the different areas that make up iCor is to offer first-class training and at the same time instruct future health professionals.

Postgraduate stage
Master's Final Project (TFM)
Our group also welcomes master’s students to complete their Master’s Final Thesis (TFM). During their cycle, students actively participate in advanced projects related to our main research areas, with close monitoring by the team. This experience allows them to consolidate knowledge and prepare for a future scientific career.
MIR training at iCor
Once they have obtained their Medicine degree and the MIR position in the specialties of Cardiology or Cardiac Surgery, resident doctors who join the iCor will begin a 5-year training period in the healthcare and academic structure of the Heart Area.
Specialties and places
In the current cycle, the iCor has 16 resident internists (MIR) :
- 3 places assigned to the Cardiac Surgery Service
- 13 places corresponding to the Cardiology Service
Each resident will be trained gradually according to the year of residency they are in, following a structured itinerary.
Rotations and training
During the first year, residents rotate through different services of the hospital, acquiring a global and transversal vision of cardiovascular patient care. From the second year, they are progressively integrated into the specific units of their specialty, carrying out annual rotations of 2 to 3 months for each unit.
Scientific participation
Throughout their residency, iCor MIRs actively participate in national and international congresses, presenting scientific and clinical research papers. This activity is carried out with the constant support of the iCor medical team and management, promoting complete clinical and academic training.
In addition, as a resident, there is the option of completing a training period of external rotation at another center. Monte Fiore Hospital in New York is one of the examples of a recent external rotation center, an international reference center in Cardiology.
Continuing education
On the other hand, one of the pillars that reinforce the training of iCor professionals is the policy of continuous training through weekly sessions on the different areas covered by iCor.
Once a month, these sessions are held in the Germans Trias Hospital auditorium and are open to all interested healthcare personnel. Both resident internists and professionals from the Heart Area are trained on the latest advances and updates.
In addition, iCor also teaches courses, workshops and Cardiology Conferences that are open to professionals from both iCor itself and the rest of the hospital and external to the Can Ruti Campus.
Undergraduate stage
Degree in Medicine
The iCor is present in the university training of future doctors by teaching the subjects MIC II and PMQ, in the fourth year, and AIM, in the sixth year, at the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), located on the Can Ruti Campus.
Final Degree Project (TFG)
We offer the possibility of carrying out the Final Degree Project (TFG) within our research lines. Students are integrated into ongoing projects and develop their work under the direct supervision of members of the ICREC group, acquiring skills in experimental methodology, critical analysis of results and scientific writing.
Extracurricular internships
The iCor research group (ICREC) welcomes undergraduate students who wish to do extracurricular internships as a complement to their academic training. These internships offer a first experience in the biomedical research environment, participating in laboratory tasks, data analysis and scientific discussion, always with the support of the research team.
High school
There is a collaboration between iCor and the Sant Miquel dels Sants School (Vic) where some of its students have the opportunity to do their Research Project under the supervision of researchers from the ICREC Group.
Together with the teachers of the Department of Science of the Sant Miquel dels Sants School in Vic, the ICREC research group supervises 1st year Baccalaureate students in carrying out the Research Project. The chosen topics are related to cardiology and the researchers help the students during the summer months with the experimental design, the execution of the practical part of the work as well as the interpretation of the results obtained.
