The Cardiac Surgery Service of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital is a highly specialized reference service in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases using surgical techniques (open surgery) and minimally invasive techniques.
Since its creation in 2000, it has been one of the pillars of advanced surgical cardiovascular care at our institution, forming part of the Clinical Management of the Heart Area since 2012, and maintaining a high commitment to quality, innovation and continuous improvement of patient care.
The Service performs between 550 and 650 surgeries annually, evolving in its area of reference and assuming coverage of the Girona region since 2014, as an extended service. It currently has coverage of 1,600,000 inhabitants throughout the Barcelonès Nord and Maresme areas, and the Girona area in complex and emerging pathology.
Since its creation, the Cardiac Surgery Service has had a 24-hour, 365-day on-call system, with two local surgeons and a surgical and perfusion nursing team, as well as specialized anesthesiology. The Service has a specialized critical care unit – with 8 beds.
As recognition, the Service was accredited in 2009 by the Ministry of Health to carry out Specialized Medical Training and teaching, training 7 surgeons in these years. There are currently four residents (1 per year) in training.
Since its creation, more than 14,000 surgeries have been performed and in recent years the portfolio of services has expanded to include:
Minimally invasive mitral and aortic surgery.
Structural heart disease with percutaneous aortic valve replacement implant (TAVI) as well as mitral pathology – being one of the few hospitals in Spain with the TendyneTM transcatheter program.
Concomitant atrial fibrillation program.
Short and long-term assistance program.
Heart Failure Program – Long-term care (LVAD) as a destination therapy.
Complex aortic pathology (Aortic arch).
Aortic and mitral valve repair program.
In terms of its link and involvement with research, the Cardiac Surgery Service actively collaborates with the ICREC research group, belonging to the IGTP, with different clinical trials and observational studies. It is also part of the hospital’s CPR-ECMO program, supporting the Intensive Care Service as well as the Cardiological Acute Care Unit.
The Cardiac Surgery Service has two class A operating rooms to carry out its activity with the incorporation of a hybrid operating room in 2014, which allows for an increase in the complexity of the structural heart disease procedures carried out by the Service, with availability 24 hours a day – 365 days a year for emergency coverage.
A multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthetists specialized in Cardiac Surgery and Ultrasound, specialized surgical nursing staff and perfusionists make up the Service and guarantee safe, precise and top-quality care.
Furthermore, the Service has its own database, which is updated daily with monthly and annual internal audits, which provide comprehensive and reliable data to maintain the excellence of results and enhance research activity. The Service annually sends surgical results to the Spanish Society of Cardiac and Endovascular Surgery (SECEE) as well as to the European Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS).
In addition to healthcare activity, the unit carries out intense teaching work with the training of resident doctors (MIR) and medical students from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and an excellent research aspect with studies and publications of clinical research projects, both its own and in international clinical trials, contributing significantly to innovation in the field of surgery.
