The Hemodynamics and Interventionist Cardiology Unit of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital is a highly specialized reference service in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases using minimally invasive techniques, both at the coronary and structural levels.
Since its creation in 2000, it has been one of the pillars of advanced cardiovascular care at our institution, with a high commitment to quality, innovation and continuous improvement of patient care, and is responsible for tertiary cardiological care for the entire area of Barcelonès Nord and Maresme, with a population of over 800,000 inhabitants.
Since 2007, the Unit has had a system of on-call service located 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction through primary angioplasty, and is one of the first centers in Catalonia to implement this coverage and subsequently within the Codi Infart program of the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
In the Hemodynamics Unit, more than 2,500 procedures are performed each year, including more than 1,000 coronary angioplasty with stent implantation and more than 160 percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVI) procedures as well as other structural interventions. mitral and tricuspid (Terrain-to-Earth Therapy (TEER)), tricuspid annuloplasty or closure of the left atrial appendage in patients with fibrillation.
The entire range of highly complex angioplasties, calcified lesions that require plaque modification techniques (atherectomies or intravascular lithotripsy), and treatments in complex bifurcations or chronic coronary occlusions are also performed. The implantation of mechanical circulatory support systems such as the Impella® or ECMO is also performed. The Unit has extensive experience in the use of intracoronary imaging, both with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundamental tools to optimize diagnosis and the results of the procedures.
The Unit has been a pioneer in Catalonia in the systematic use of radial access for coronary procedures, improving patient safety and comfort, as well as in the implementation of innovative techniques such as percutaneous renal denervation for the treatment of resistant hypertension.
The Unit has two interventional rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology (digital angiographs, intracardiac echocardiography, pressure and flow guides) and a multidisciplinary team of interventional cardiologists and specialized nursing staff, guaranteeing safe, precise and top-quality care.
In addition to healthcare activity, the unit carries out intense teaching work with the training of resident doctors (MIR) and medical students from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and an excellent research aspect with studies and publications of clinical research projects, both its own and in international collaboration, contributing significantly to innovation in the field of interventional cardiology.
