The Acute Cardiac Care Unit (UCAC) of the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, in operation since 1989, is the area of the hospital equipped with the technical means and human resources necessary for the care and continuous monitoring of patients with severe acute heart disease. With more than 1,900 admissions per year, it is the reference unit for cardiac emergencies that require diagnostic techniques or specialized treatments in the healthcare sector of Barcelonès Nord and Maresme, which has more than 800,000 inhabitants.
The UCAC, which includes the Coronary Unit (UCO) and the Post-Acute Heart Unit (UPAC), works with the Infarction Code of the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Every year, more than 1900 patients with acute myocardial infarction, severe heart failure, cardiorespiratory arrest, serious arrhythmias, acute aortic pathology, and other patients undergoing cardiac surgery and other interventional procedures are admitted.
In terms of its infrastructure, UCAC has 8 critical and 12 semi-critical beds with all the necessary equipment to perform the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that acute heart patients may require, meeting the requirements of the European Society of Cardiology regulations. These include invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, transthoracic and transesophageal Doppler echocardiography, ultrafiltration and continuous hemodiafiltration, therapeutic hypothermia, and short-term care systems such as Impella CP® and venoarterial ECMO.
In the Unit we also have a room with fluoroscopy equipment that allows the practice of procedures that require radiological control (pericardiocentesis, percutaneous transvenous pacemaker implantation, cardiac catheterization, etc.).
In addition to healthcare activities, UCAC provides teaching to specialist doctors in training (MIR), who are a fundamental part of patient care, especially during continuous care hours, and to students of the Degree in Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
On the other hand, clinical research is carried out that has resulted in the publication of numerous scientific articles, the presentation of multiple communications at conferences and the supervision of doctoral theses.
